TMJ Dysfunction
What Is It?
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction refers to a condition that affects the jaw joint and muscles that control jaw movement. The TMJ is the joint that connects your jaw to your skull, allowing you to open and close your mouth, chew, and speak.
Many people complain that they:
- Jaw pain or tenderness
- Difficulty or pain while chewing
- Clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the mouth
- Locking of the jaw
- Headaches
- Ear pain or ringing in the ears
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Difficulty opening the mouth fully
Headaches
What Is It?
Headaches are a syndrome, not a symptom. Headaches can be influenced by muscle tension and dysfunction. Muscles in the head, neck, and shoulders can become tight and strained due to factors such as poor posture, stress, and overuse. When these muscles are tense, they can contribute to headaches and even worsen migraine symptoms.
Muscle tension in the neck, jaw and shoulders can lead to referred pain in the head, causing tension-type headaches or exacerbating migraine pain. Additionally, tight muscles can restrict blood flow and nerve function, further contributing to headache symptoms. The tempomandibular joint (TMJ) can also be a major cause of headaches.
Many people complain are that they:
- Have pain radiating into the eye
- Jaw pain
- Pain in the temples and forehead
- Neck tension
- Upper trap tension
